U.S. Expresses Concerns Over South Asian Tensions

The United States said Friday it was seriously concerned by the mounting tensions between India and Pakistan, warning that a war between the two nuclear armed countries would be devastating.
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told reporters that the U.S. had delivered the message to India during a three-day U.S.-Indian defense talks ending here on Thursday.
"We made the point that war is not an option, given the dangersof escalation and the risks of uncertainty in an armed conflict between two nuclear armed powers," Rumsfeld said.
The secretary also highlighted the need for New Delhi and Islamabad to reduce the tensions between them.
He complained that the tensions have forced Pakistan to reduce its troops originally deployed along its border with Afghanistan to help the U.S. pursue Taliban and al Qaida fugitives.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated since a group of Islamic militants attacked an Indian Army camp in the disputed Kashmir last week. Islamabad has denied any involvement in the incident.
