Macao SAR Chief Executive Meets China World Cup Squad

Macao special administrative region (SAR) chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah on Friday met the Chinese national soccer team, who arrived here Thursday night from Shanghai for the last World Cup finals warm-upagainst Portugal on Saturday.

Macao special administrative region (SAR) chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah on Friday met the Chinese national soccer team, who arrived here Thursday night from Shanghai for the last World Cup finals warm-upagainst Portugal on Saturday.

Ho extended warm welcome to the national team, shaking hands with each of the players. "The Macao people, just like people all over the country, will cheer up the Chinese team."

"The warm-up is a great event in Macao," the chief executive added.

Nan Yong, head of the national team for the World Cup, expressed his hope that the match in Macao will yield active significance for his team's performance in the finals.

He welcomed the Macao people to watch the World Cup in a "healthy, smooth and joyful" mood.

Nan thanked the local government for its arduous efforts made for the soccer match and wished Macao to make further progress in the fields of economy, culture and sports.

The Chinese team plans to conduct intense training Friday evening. Shortly after the warm-up ends, it will leave for South Korea by a chartered plane.

The Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup finals will run from May 31 to June 30. China will play its first round matches against Costa Rica, Brazil and Turkey in Group C in South Korea.
