Visiting senior Chinese leader Li Ruihuan said Thursday in Kiev that reform and opening up are a keymove for China's future and represent the only way for invigorating the Chinese nation.

The dramatic changes that have taken place in China over the past two decades are the result of the reform and opening-up drive, said Li, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), during his talks with Ukrainian Prime Minister Anotoly Kinakh.

However, he noted, reform always involves adjustment of interests and with the reform efforts going further, more and moredilemmas and unexpected problems will emerge.

"We must take the improvement of people's welfare as the ultimate goal of reform, listening to their opinions, understanding their problems and taking measures to protect their interests, so as to win their support," he said.

China is going to take its own experiences as lessons in its future development and wishes Ukraine great success in its own reform and development, said Li.

For his part, Kinakh echoed Li's views by saying Ukraine is also entering a complicated stage of reform and is willing to enhance exchanges and contacts with China in many fields, including ways of development.

Ukraine is the third leg of Li's ongoing four-nation Europe tour which has taken him to Bulgaria and Slovenia and will take him to Britain.
