South Korea will restrict cars with even or odd-numbered plates on respective days during the May 31-June 30 Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup finals to ease traffic congestion, an organizing committee (KOWOC) official said Friday.

"If it's an even-numbered day, then a car with an even-numbered plate is banned," the official told reporters.

However, funeral and wedding cars, as well as diplomatic, pressand emergency vehicles, will be exempted from the restrictions that Seoul also imposed during the 1988 Olympics, she added.

Violators of the restriction will be fined up to 50,000 won (40US dollars) in Seoul where the curbs are mandatory. The restrictions are voluntary in South Korea's nine other venue cities.
