16,000 South Korean Volunteers Gear Up for 2002 World Cup
The South Korean Organizing Committee for the World Cup (KOWOC) have selected more than 16,000 volunteers for the upcoming soccer tournament, KOWOC said on Thursday.

KOWOC began accepting volunteer application in April 2001 and received more than 47,680 from South Korea and overseas, three times the number of positions available. Among the 47,680 applicants, KOWOC selected 16,200.
Women make up 56% of the volunteers. The volunteer pool is pretty young, with people in their 20s accounting for 52% of the volunteers and teenagers making up 18%. People in their 30s comprise 12% of the pool, in their 40s 10%, in their 50s 5% and in their 60s 2%.
Students make up 53%, and the remaining volunteers come from wide-ranging backgrounds such as the self-employed, homemakers and public servants.
Almost all the selected volunteers possess proficiency in at least one foreign language. More than 64% of them are proficient in English. Other language skills represented are Japanese (16%), Chinese (4%), French (4%), German (3%) and Spanish (2%).
About five percent of the volunteers come from 20 overseas countries including the United States, Japan, China, Canada and Brazil.
Volunteers are assigned to various areas such as administration, access control, accreditation, language services, medical and health, transportation, telecommunication, IT, media and logistics.
