Good Chance for Argentina in World Cup, Varallo Says
The only survivor of the Argentine soccer team who competed in the first World Cup in 1930, Francisco Varallo, has predicted his home side have good chances to win the Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup.
The only survivor of the Argentine soccer team who competed in the first World Cup in 1930, Francisco Varallo, has predicted his home side have good chances to win the Korea-Japan 2002 World Cup.
Varallo, 92, was quoted by the press on Wednesday that coach Marcelo Bielsa "armed a great team and that all the players have already had European experience".
Former central striker Varallo was part of the Argentine team who lost the final against Uruguay in the 1930 World Cup in Montevideo.
"England and Nigeria will be very tough teams because they also have World Cup experience, but if Argentina qualifies to the next round it will have good possibilities to become a champion," he added.
Argentina, England, Nigeria and Sweden complete Group F, or the well-known "Group of Death", in the first round of the World Cup, to be co-hosted by Japan and South Korea on May 31-June 30.
The former striker said he would like to see Hernan Crespo and Gabriel Batistuta play together, although coach Bielsa "does not think the same."
Argentina won the 1978 and 1986 World Cups, at home and in Mexico, respectively.
