The Japanese Ambassador to Peru, Takashi Kiya, on Wednesday denied the allegation that his country is giving shelter to former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori.

During a ceremony at the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, Kiya said that the Fujimori affair is "of delicate nature."

"Japan does not protect the ex-president. Sincerely, we're doing our best on this matter according to the Japanese law," Kiya said in response to Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo's remarks that he could not believe the Japanese government was protecting a person accused of severe felonies.

Whenever an extradition is requested of Japan, the country's judicial authorities will consider it, Kiya said.

Kiya added that he had no information on the present state of Fujimori in Tokyo.

Fujimori, in exile in Japan since November 2000 when he was on a visit to Japan during which he telegraphed his resignation to Congress, has been charged in Peru with crimes against humanity, embezzlement, dereliction of duty, illicit enrichment and corruption.
