Italian President Meets with Chinese Vice Premier

China and Italy expressed the hope Tuesday in Rome to widen cooperative relations, especially in the field of cultural, scientific and technical exchange in the new century during Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing's official visit in the country.

China and Italy expressed the hope Tuesday in Rome to widen cooperative relations, especially in the field of cultural, scientific and technical exchange in the new century.

During a meeting with Italian President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing, who arrived Tuesday from Greece for a five-day official visit to Italy, said that there are frequent high-profile exchange visits and cooperation between the two countries. Beijing and Rome share identical or similar views on many important international matters.

Li said that China attaches great importance to developing its economic and trade ties with Italy, which he said have been growing rapidly over recent years.

The Chinese vice-premier said that China has a huge market with a good environment for foreign investment while Italian enterprises have the advantage in capital, technology and management, adding that the exchange between the enterprises of the two countries should be encouraged.

Ciampi said the relation between Italy and China is developing smoothly. Bilateral trade cooperation has been growing rapidly in recent years. More and more Italian entrepreneurs would like to invest in China.

Ciampi expressed the hope that the two countries should further strengthen their friendly and harmonious relationship.

Li also met with former Italian Prime Minister Giuglio Andreotti.

  • Political Relations: Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the friendship and cooperation between the two countries in every respect have witnessed smooth development. Especially in recent years, exchange of visits between the leaders of both sides has increased, which promotes the understanding between the two sides, and pushes the bilateral relationship forward.

  • Economic Cooperation: Italy is an important trade partner of China in European Union. In 1970, the trade volume was only 1.2 billion USD. In 1999, the trade volume reached 5.616 billion USD, with an increase of 15.6%, in which China exported 2.929 billion USD, imported 2.687 billion USD. In 2000, the trade volume was 6.88 billion USD, 22.7% more than 1999, in which China exported 3.802 billion USD, imported 3.078 billion USD. The Sino-Italian economic and technological cooperation has also witnessed a rapid development.

  • Culture Exchange: The two sides signed the agreement on peaceful utilization, research and exploration of space, renewed the scientific and technological cooperation agreement in June 1998, and put in place a joint committee on scientific and technological cooperation. In June 2000, the tenth session of the Joint Committee on Science and Technological Cooperation was held in Beijing. >>details
