Iran Rejects US Charges of Supporting Terrorism

Iran on Wednesday rejected recent U.S. allegations against the Islamic republic on supporting terrorism, saying that the charges are "baseless and outside the scope of the U.S. authority."
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told the official IRNA news agency that the charges raised by U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and in a U.S. report "had been a politically-motivated approach towards the issue of terrorism."
In its annual report on world terrorism issued on Tuesday, the U.S. State Department designated Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Cuba and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) as "statesponsors of terrorism."
While admitting that there is no evidence about Tehran's involvement in the September 11 attacks, the report still identified Iran as the "most active" terror supporter in 2001.
Asefi denounced the charges as in line with the U.S. hostile policy towards the Islamic republic, adding the repetition of backward and unconventional behavior indicates that Washington is not aware of international developments.
Raising such accusations were meant to whitewash Washington's repeated failures in pushing ahead its foreign policy, particularlyits Mideast policy, he said.
Meanwhile, the spokesman accused the White House of supporting Israeli Zionist regime, saying that this manifested Washington's double-standard and selective approach to the issue of terrorism.
Iran, as a major victim of terrorism, will always remain committed to an all-out, fundamental and non-selective campaign against terrorism within the framework of the United Nations, he stressed.
The United States and Iran have severed relations since 1980 after Iranian students stormed the American Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and took its staff hostage for 444 days. Since then the two countries have imposed policies of hostility towards each other.
