China Signs IP Cooperation Protocol with WIPO

A protocol on the cooperation between the State Intellectual Property Office of China and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was signed on May 21. The State Intellectual Property Office indicated when drawing up the agreement it paid attention to the China's characteristics and the current situation of the IP, with an aim to enhance the overall cooperation and exchange with the WIPO.

A protocol on the cooperation between the State Intellectual Property Office of China and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) was signed on May 21.

The protocol covers two areas: "priority area" and "the area the two sides both concern". The privileged area include ten aspects: the problems related to traditional information and folk culture; the agenda of the world patent system and the process of the reforms to treaty on patent cooperation; the protection and improvement of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs); the communication and utilization of the patent information; the IP problems caused by the Internet development; the application of IT technologies in the IP protection and so on.

Among them, the problems related to traditional information and folk culture and those caused by the Internet development are the common concern of the countries that carry out the IP system. The IP organizations in China and the world are conducting studies on them.

Cooperation with WIPO expected to enhance
The State Intellectual Property Office of China indicated when drawing up the agreement it paid attention to the China's characteristics and the current situation of the IP, with an aim to enhance the overall cooperation and exchange with the WIPO. Experts noted the agreement will contribute to the development of China's IP system, economy and technologies with China's accession into the WTO.

The protocol was signed during the Sino-African Intellectual Property Forum - which opened Tuesday in Beijing - by WIPO Director-General Kamil Idris and Wang Jingchuan, commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office.

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji also met with Idris.

Zhu said that the Chinese Government attaches great importance to intellectual property protection. Although China has achieved some progress in the field in recent years, much remains to be done, and China is willing to further co-operate with the WIPO.
