People in flood-stricken counties in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have donated 5 million yuan in relief funds for affected families.

The 2,000 leading officials from the Tekes County have raised 326,000 yuan for disaster-hit families.

Wang Xinli, secretary of the County Committee of the Communist Party of China, said though the donation just covered urgent needs, the people affected would feel that the government cares about them.

Upushi, a middle-aged woman in Tekes County in the Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of Ili, received 2,000 yuan from relief funds to pay medical fees for her son who is suffering from the acute hepatitis.

She said in front of a tent which now serves as her home, "The Communist Party has saved my son's life."

It is reported the Hong Kong Red Cross has provided Xinjiang with 100,000 yuan for relief funds as well as clothing. The regional civil affairs department has sent 450 tents to disaster-hit areas.

A rainfall of between 240 mm and 360 mm, some 60 percent of the normal annual rainfall, has fallen in some parts of the Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of Ili in the past 20 days.

Some 561,800 people have been affected by the collapse of 87,700 homes and the 185,800 in need of repair. Some 20,000 stables have collapsed, killing nearly 120,000 head of livestock.

Wheat and corn seeds sown on about 16,230 hectares of farmland have rotted.
