Xinjiang Coal Mine Collapse Toll Reaches 9

Rescuers said Tuesday they had foundtwo more bodies underground in a coal mine in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region that collapsed Monday, bringing the total numberof deaths to nine.

Rescuers said Tuesday they had foundtwo more bodies underground in a coal mine in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region that collapsed Monday, bringing the total numberof deaths to nine.

The accident occurred at 2:30 pm Monday, in a mine belonging tothe Miquan Yuantong Coal Mining Company in the Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture, northern Xinjiang.

According to earlier reports, 23 injured miners were rushed to three local hospitals where seven died.

A gas or coal dust explosion might have caused the collapse, according to investigators. The investigation and rescue work is continuing.

In 1997, a coal dust explosion took place in the same mine, leaving seven people dead.
