Beijing Confident of Doubling Per Capita GDP by 2008
Beijing Mayor Liu Qi said Tuesday he is confident of the target that the per capita GDP would rise to 6,000 U.S. dollars by 2008, doubling the current figure for the Chinese capital. China's accession to the WTO and Beijing's successful bid for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games are two major factors that will boost Beijing's economic development.
Mayor Liu Qi said Tuesday he is confident of the target that the per capita gross domestic product (GDP) would rise to 6,000 U.S. dollars by 2008, doubling the current figure for the Chinese capital.
Liu made the remark at the ongoing congress of the Communist Party of China Beijing Municipal Committee.
Compared with the estimated national economic growth rate of 7 per cent during the 2001-05 period, Beijing's targeted 9 per cent is practical, based on its healthy economic development in recent years, he said.
China's accession to the World Trade Organization and Beijing's successful bid for hosting the 2008 Olympic Games are two major factors that will boost Beijing's economic development, the mayor said.
Beijing's per capita GDP target of 6,000 U.S. dollars was formerly set for the year 2010.
The city witnessed an average annual growth rate of 10.3 percent in the last five years, with the contribution of the service industry to the economic growth rising to 58.9 percent last year.
