NPC Chairman Meets Cypriot Leader

Exchanges and cooperation between the parliaments of China and Cyprus helped improve understanding and friendship between the people of the two countries, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) Li Peng said on Tuesday.

During his meeting with President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Dimitris Christofias in the Great Hall of the People, Li said the NPC had maintained good exchanges and cooperation with the parliament of Cyprus.

Li called Christofias an old friend of the Chinese people, who had made significant contributions to the growth of bilateral ties.He said friendly bilateral relations of cooperation had kept growing since the two countries established diplomatic relations 30 years ago.

In recent years, the two countries had made frequent exchanges of high-level visits and exchanges have increased in political, economic and trade and cultural areas, producing positive results,he said.

Despite differences in historical tradition and cultural background, the two countries have always enjoyed mutual respect, mutual support, treated each other as equals and conducted mutually beneficial cooperation, Li said.

China attaches importance to developing friendly relations with Cyprus, and is willing to expand cooperation with Cyprus on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, he said.

Li thanked Cyprus for its support of China on such issues as Taiwan and human rights. He also praised the stance the parliament of Cyprus has adopted against the Falun Gong cult.

Christofias said that Cyprus valued its friendship with China. He spoke highly of the positive benefits from bilateral cooperation over the past three decades.
