Sri Lankan Family Members Visit Rebel-held Relatives
A group of family members of the Sri Lankan government forces are now visiting their relatives detained by Tamil Tiger rebels in the north of the country.
A group of family members of the Sri Lankan government forces are now visiting their relatives detained by Tamil Tiger rebels in the north of the country.
The visit was permitted by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels following a request by the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), ICRC spokesman Arjuna Ranawana said.
Among the family members is a 10-year-old boy of a navy captain who was abducted by the LTTE eight years ago. This is the first time the father and son to meet each other.
The family members arrived at Mallavi on Monday and spent the night with their seven relatives, six army personnel and one navy captain, who are detained by the LTTE rebels.
The family members will stay there for three days and return with the convoy of the ICRC, which arranged the tour.
Last time the seven government forces personnel met their family members was in February 2000.
