Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says Southeast Asia should not fear a strong, economically vibrant China.
``China's growing prosperity cannot but make it a great market for Southeast Asia,'' Mahathir said in a speech prepared for delivery at a conference organized by Japan's Nihon Keizai economic newspaper.
Mahathir, Asia's longest serving leader and a fierce critic of the West, is in Japan on a three-day unofficial visit. In more than 20 years in office, he has modeled many of his economic policies on those of Japan.
Tuesday's speech had Mahathir saying Southeast Asia should also not look upon China as a territorial threat since the country has no history of expansion.
``I don't think China is about to change its ways and become a colonial power,'' he said.
Separately, Mahathir met for about 30 minutes Tuesday morning with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, said Koizumi's spokeswoman Misako Kaji.
