About 4,000 people have been displaced by heavy fighting between Ugandan troops and the Lord Resistance Army (LRA) rebels in southern Sudan, a report reaching in Kampala said on Sunday.

Sudanese Labor Minister Alison Manani Magaya, who is heading a commission into the fighting southern region of Eastern Equatoria, was quoted as saying that the displaced people "are in urgent needof help".

He said that 210 Sudanese have been killed during the current fighting in the region bordering Uganda.

The Ugandan army confirmed here last week that the LRA rebels had killed at least 470 Sudanese civilians since April this year.

"The killings started around April 26 with some 60 mourners andsince then the LRA rebels have progressively carried out indiscriminate killings," Ugandan Army spokesman Shaban Bantariza said recently.

A statement signed last weekend by Jervasio Okot, social communications officer of Torit Diocese in the Sudan, said the LRArebels razed six villages located on the Imotong mountain ranges in southern Sudan.

It was said that the Sudanese authorities had ordered civiliansto vacate areas in the south, currently occupied by Uganda's LRA rebels led by Joseph Kony as fighting intensified.

Kony and his fighters, estimated to be about 2,000, are said tobe holed up in Katire near Acholi mountains. They are being pursued by the Ugandan government troops.
