China will establish full diplomatic relations with East Timor so as to lay down a vital political foundation for developing overall friendship between the two countries, Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Saturday in Dili.
Tang, who is here to attend East Timor's independence day celebrations scheduled for May 20, met East Timor Senior Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Jose Ramos-Horta.
He highly appreciated the domestic and foreign policy pursued by the East Timor transitional government for national reconciliation and economic reconstruction.
Tang said China supports East Timor in playing a more positive role in international and regional affairs, and promised to implement the arrangement on China's economic and technical assistance to this new country.
He proposed to enhance economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, adding that China encourages its enterprises to participate in the economic construction of East Timor.
Ramos-Horta thanked China's support and help to East Timor during its process of independence.
East Timor and China will sign a communique on establishing diplomatic relations shortly after the independence day ceremonies, which will make China one of the first countries to establish diplomatic ties with East Timor, Ramos-Horta said.
He reaffirmed East Timor's firm position on the one-China policy, noting that East Timor supports China's efforts for the peaceful reunification of the country.
