Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan arrived in the East Timor capital of Dili Saturday to attend East Timor's independence ceremony scheduled for May 20.
Tang flew in from Indonesia after a brief visit to Jakarta, where he met Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri.
The May 20 ceremony marks the creation of the youngest country in the world.
East Timor had been under Indonesian rule since 1976 after it was annexed by Jakarta. In May 1999, Indonesia, Portugal and the United Nations reached a consensus to hold a referendum on the future of East Timor. In August, East Timor chose to break away from Indonesia to create an independent state.
About 96 heads of state or government, foreign ministers and special envoys will witness the birth of a new republic at the independence ceremony at midnight on Monday.
