China Welcomes US-Russia Nuclear Arms Reduction Deal: FM

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan has welcomed the United States and Russia reaching an agreement that will substantially reduce their offensive nuclear arsenals.

Visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan has welcomed the United States and Russia reaching an agreement that will substantially reduce their offensive nuclear arsenals.

The Chinese foreign minister made the comment when he talking on the telephone with US Secretary of State Colin Powell Thursday night in Jakarta.

In their conversation, Powell briefed Tang Jiaxuan on the agreement between the US and Russia. Tang Jiaxuan expressed the hope that the two countries will continue their efforts to reduce their nuclear arsenals in this manner, so as to further advance the process of international nuclear disarmament.

Tang Jiaxuan arrived here Thursday night on an official visit to Indonesia. He is scheduled to hold talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda and meet with President Megawati Soekarnoputri on Friday.

US, Russia Reach Nuclear Arms Reductions Deal: Bush

U.S. President George W. Bush announced on May 13 that the United States and Russia have reached an agreement that will substantially reduce their offensive nuclear arsenals.

"This is good news for the American people," Bush said, hailing the agreement will "make the world more peaceful, and put behind us the Cold War once and for all." full text

Putin: Russia, US Agree on Text of New Arms Cut Deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin welcomed the agreement reached on Monday between U.S. and Russian negotiators on reduction of strategic offensive weapons during their latest round of consultations.

The President said he was satisfied with the joint work of Russian and U.S. negotiators, which has been intensified in recent weeks in an effort to clinch a new arms control agreement by the time of U.S. President George W. Bush's Moscow visit scheduled for May 23 to 26. full text
