An American citizen has been arrested in Israel on suspicion of raising money for the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), a news service of Israel's leading newspaper Ha'aretz reported Wednesday evening.

The suspect was identified by the news service as 33-year-old Riad Abed al-Karim. He was said to be arrested upon his arrival at Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion International Airport on May 5.

The report said that the Tel Aviv District Court partially lifted the gag order imposed on the affair on Wednesday when Al- Karim was remanded for another seven days.

Al-Karim is suspected of being a senior activist in the Holy Land Foundation, which was declared illegal by U.S. President George W. Bush in December in light of information indicating that it had raised funds in America for Hamas's activity. Israel declared the organization illegal in 1997.
