Karzai Meets Chinese Foreign Minister
Tang said China is happy with the fact that under the leadership of Karzai and his interim government, Afghanistan has made great progress in a short period of time in promoting peace, establishing a government and carrying out reconstruction.
Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai met with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan on Wednesday.
Tang conveyed greetings to Karzai from Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji. He said China is happy with the fact that under the leadership of Karzai and his interim government, Afghanistan has made great progress in a short period of time in promoting peace, establishing a government and carrying out reconstruction.
China believes that peace and reconstruction are the two major tasks for Afghanistan, said Tang. As a neighbor, China sincerely hopes that all parties in Afghanistan would bear in mind national interests and work for peace.
China hopes that a broadly based and widely representative transitional government could be selected at the upcoming Emergency Loya Jirga, said Tang. He also asked the international community to take concrete steps to help with Afghanistan's reconstruction.
Tang said there is a long history of friendly contacts between China and Afghanistan. China has only one goal in Afghanistan: to promote peace and development, he said. He promised that China would continue to support the peace process and reconstruction.
Karzai recalled his trip to Beijing in January, which, he said, was very impressive. He said he admired China's achievements in social and economic development.
Karzai described China as a true great friend of Afghanistan.
Karzai thanked China for its unselfish assistance to Afghanistan and appreciated China's participation in Afghanistan's reconstruction. He said his country welcomes more Chinese companies to Afghanistan for business.
Karzai said Afghan people's enthusiasm for the Loya Jirga is a manifestation of their strong aspirations for peace. He promised that the interim authority would do its best to ensure a fair Loya Jirga.
Both Karzai and Tang reiterated their common stance on fighting against terrorists advocating the so-called East Turkstan.
Tang Arrived in Kabul on Wednesday morning for an one-day visit.
