Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir left Cairo Wednesday afternoon after concluding a short visit to Egypt, Egypt's official MENA news agency said.

During the visit, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak held talks with Bashir on bilateral ties, an Egyptian-Libyan initiative on Sudan's reconciliation and the latest Mideast situation.

Last year, Egypt and Libya put forth a new reconciliation plan for Sudan, calling for resuming Sudanese peace process, forming a transitional cabinet of all political forces, specifying the date and arrangements of new general elections, and immediatly ceasing all forms of hostilities.

The Sudanese Islamic government forces have been fighting with the southern rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army, which has been struggling for greater autonomy for the predominantly Christian and animist south since 1983.

The Sudanese president paid his last visit to Egypt in May, 2001.
