China Mobile has first become China's biggest telecom operator instead of China Telecom, the ever telecom sector's giant, which has downgraded to the second place, according to sources from the Ministry of Information Industry on May 15.
And China Netcom has upgraded to the third place with China Unicom dropped to the fourth, and the rest is shared by ChinaSat and China Railcom, according to the new ranking list.
Moreover, China Mobile's market share only makes 36.3 percent in the first quarter this year and the market share for other enterprises is also less than 50 percent, laying a basis for a fair and effectual competition.
According to the reform plan on telecom system issued by the State Council last year, the former China Telecom has been divided into two groups: the southern part, which keeps the title, reputation and intangible assets, covers 21 provinces and cities. And the northern part, which covers 10 provinces and cities, will be reorganized into China Net Telecom Group to include the former China Netcom and Jitong.
After the reform, China's telecom industry will be formally shared by six operators including China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile, China Unicom, ChinaSat, and China Railcom. And there will be huge competition among the operators in various telecom fields, especially in the fixed phone sector.
