G8 Summit to Adopt African Action Plan
The G8 group of world's most industrialized nations will adopt an action plan at June's summit in Canada to support economic development in Africa, said Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien in an interview with the French daily, Le Figaro, on Tuesday.
The G8 group of world's most industrialized nations will adopt an action plan at June's summit in Canada to support economic development in Africa, said Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien in an interview with the French daily, Le Figaro, on Tuesday.
"We should inject more money for the development of Africa and open our own markets. We will adopt an action plan in Kananaskis ( the Canadian host city for G8)," said Chretien.
The Canadian prime minister arrived here on Monday following a tour in Africa, during which he talked with African leaders about the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), an African initiative aiming at stemming poverty on the continent.
"The Africans should respect a series of values such as human rights, democracy, good governance and elimination of corruption", in return for massive investments from rich countries, Chretien told Le Figaro.
Chretien also said the G8 summit this year would be different with limited participation and focused topics.
"The G8 summit was turned into a certain kind of festival. Last year in Genoa (Italy), the American delegation consisted of about 1,000 members. (This year) we have fixed a maximum of 40 participants for each country," said Chretien.
"We have decided to limit the summit to three topics: the international economic situation, the fight against terrorism and Africa, which will be the principle subject," he added.
