Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat ordered on Tuesday the forming of a Palestinian committee to immediately rebuild the destroyed Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank.

An official statement issued after the weekly meeting of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) cabinet said that Arafat nominated Cabinet Minister Azzam El Ahmed to chair the committee and start filed work.

Dozens of Palestinian houses at the Jenin camp were destroyed in April by Israeli tanks, bulldozers and helicopter missiles during a nine-day close fight with Palestinian militants.

"The committee would study also the needs of the residents who gave big sacrifices for the sake of freedom and national independence," said the PNA statement published by the Palestinian Wafa news agency.

Meanwhile, the PNA cabinet approved a bill on the immediate implementation of a Palestinian independent law, which had been discussed and presented by the Palestine Legislative Council (PLC).

The cabinet statement said that Arafat ordered the publication of the law in the local newspapers and the implementation of it as soon as possible.

The cabinet ministers expressed satisfaction after the law was approved. The law was worked out two years ago, only to be shelved because Israel made the situation hard in the Palestinian territories, according to Palestinian officials.
