A late hat-trick by striker Su Maozhen gave China a hard-fought 3-1 win over underdogs Thailand in a World Cup warm-up in Kunming on Saturday.

After putting China 2-1 up, Su headed home a free-kick in injury time to seal the first victory for the Chinese team in their World Cup tune-up matches.

China was held to a goalless draw with South Korea on April 27.

Thailand took the lead through Manit Noyvach in the 63rd minute when the agile striker fired the ball into the net through the legs of Chinese defender Du Wei.

Su levelled the score for China in the 78th minute with a perfect header from a left cross, just one minute before he found the net again.

Apparently wary of injury before the upcoming World Cup, Chinese players seemed a little bit restrained and failed to create some good scoring opportunities in the first half.

China could have opened the scoring on the stroke of halftime when striker Qu Bo netted a pass by Qi Hong, but his effort was disallowed for offside.

Defender Li Weifeng went close in the 31st minute but his header from a right cross flew over the Thai crossbar.

China was initially to play Nigeria on Saturday but Nigeria pulled out of the scheduled friendly following the death of sports minister Ishaya Mark Aku in a plane crash
