Jordanian King Opposes US Military Action Against Iraq
Jordan's King Abdullah II said on Sunday that if the U.S. takes any military action against Iraq when Israelis and the Palestinians are still locked in a crisis, it would create serious instability in the Middle East region.
Jordan's King Abdullah II said on Sunday that if the U.S. takes any military action against Iraq when Israelis and the Palestinians are still locked in a crisis, it would create serious instability in the Middle East region.
"If there's any sensitivity to what's going on between Israelis and Palestinians now, moving on Iraq at this stage would be tremendous instability in the area and on that I don't think the Arab world would handle," the king said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" program.
Abdullah said that such a U.S. move "would really create massive disturbances throughout all Arab countries" and "threaten a lot of countries."
Jordanians would be "very angry and very upset" although Jordan 's future would not be threatened, he added.
The king hoped that the good relations Jordan enjoys with the U. S. would help Washington appreciate Jordan's position that any problem should be settled through dialogue.
The Bush administration has accused Iraq of developing weapons of mass destruction and threatened to change the regime headed by President Saddam Hussein by force if necessary.
