Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter arrived in Havana on Sunday for a six-day private visit to the island country since its 1959 revolution.
The first U.S. president - in or out of office- to visit Cuba, Carter was greeted by Cuban President Fidel Castro at the airport. The two leaders made brief statements at a welcoming ceremony.
During his stay here, Carter will hold talks with Castro and other senior Cuban leaders, visit schools and scientific research institutes and meet with religious figures to get first-hand information about Cuba, on which Washington has imposed tough sanctions since 1961.
The United States and Cuba currently do not maintain full diplomatic ties. During his presidency of 1977-81, Carter helped re-established diplomatic missions in both countries, and favored ending the 40-year old US economic embargo.
