Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo has visited the site of the May 7 air crash of a China Northern Airlines passenger plane off the coast of Dalian, in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Wu, on behalf of President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji, comforted relatives of the victims and thanked all those devoted to the rescue efforts of recent days.

During his stay, from May 9-10, Wu inspected part of the remains of the crashed aircraft, and heard reports on the accident, witnessed rescue activities and local government investigations aided by the military and armed police.

He urged rescuers to step up efforts to find bodies of the victims and the plane's "black box". He also expressed concern for the safety of rescue specialists like divers.

China Northern Airlines said on Wednesday that there were no survivors among the 103 passengers and 9 crew aboard its MD-82 plane which plunged into Dalian Bay on Tuesday.

The jet lost contact with the ground minutes after the pilot reported a fire in the plane. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
