Hong Kong of China pulled out a surprise in the Uber Cup by overcoming Indonesia 3-2 in grueling five matches as the premier badminton team tournament for ladies opened Thursday in Guangzhou.

Wang Chen, a former Chinese team member, opened the gate to victory for the Hong Kong team after she beat Lidya Djaelawijaya 5- 7, 7-2, 7-4, 7-2.

It was her teammate Wan Ting Ling, however, who solidified the team's confidence in the second match after she twice came back from 5-0 down to clinch the second and the third game. Her persistence and determination, rather than her skills, conquered Indonesian second singles player Ellen Angelina, who surrendered 7- 1 in the fourth game.

But Indonesians would not accept a defeat without fight. They leveled the score with the help of Yuli Marfuah, who beat Koon Wai Chee Louisa 8-6, 8-7, 7-4, as well as their first doubles players Deyana Lomban/Marisa Vita, who stormed to a 7-1, 7-2 and 7-4 win over Wing Mui Li/Wan Ting Ling, 7-1, 7-2, 7-4

In the critical final match, Wang Chen/W.C.L. Koon took the upper hand in the 50-minute fight before they clinched the victory 6-8, 7-2, 6-8, 7-3, 7-4.

Hong Kong of China is playing the Uber Cup through the Asian qualifying rounds for the first time after they entered the Uber Cup finals twice as the host.
