Thirteen Palestinian militants holed up in the Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity will be deported to several European Union countries under a new deal reached on ending the 38-day church standoff, CNN reported on Thursday.
CNN quoted EU sources as saying that the 13 Palestinian gunmen will be dispersed to several European countries, including Italy, which was supposed to be the original destination country for the 13 under a deal brokered by the United States and the European Union.
However, the report said that the Israeli army has declined to confirm the deal.
Under the original deal, the 13 militants wanted by Israel would be deported to Italy, another 26 militants will be sent a a jail in the Gaza Strip, and the remaining 80 civilians will go free.
But the implementation of the deal was delayed because of the refusal of Italy, which said that it had not been consulted before the deal was struck.
About 200 Palestinians took refuge in the Church of the Nativity in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on April 2 when the Israeli army entered the town as part of its military offensive against Palestinians in the West Bank.
Since then, the Israeli army has besieged the church, a traditional birthplace of Jesus Christ.
Negotiations have been going on between the Israelis and Palestinians to end the standoff.
