A mine explosion tore through the central square of a southern Russian town on Thursday, killing at least 20 people and wounding some 100 during celebrations marking the Victory Day over the Nazis, Russian media reported.
The remote-controlled mine went off on the sidewalk of the main street in the Kaspiisk town, Dagestan region, when a parade team was heading toward the town cemetery to lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Interfax reports from the scene said most of the victims were marines, veterans, children and musicians in a military band.
The center of town was cordoned off and swarming with security agents, police and rescue workers, it said.
NTV channel said the city's hospital was overcrowded with the injured.
Dagestan sees frequent small-scale bombings and other terrorist attacks, often spillover violence from the war in Chechnya next door.
