Sri Lankan Govt to Pursue Truce Pact: PM
Sri Lankan Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the government must pursue an indefinite ceasefire agreement it signed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels despite violations committed by the rebels.
Sri Lankan Prime Minster Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the government must pursue an indefinite ceasefire agreement it signed with separatist Tamil Tiger rebels despite violations committed by the rebels.
The Island newspaper said that Wickremesinghe told his cabinetof ministers on Wednesday that government troops had engaged rebelviolations in the sea and air and the cease-fire monitoring mission had been accordingly informed.
He added that when such violations were committed necessary actions would be taken. Wickremesinghe expressed satisfaction over the responsible role played by his country's armed forces and the government in upholding the ceasefire agreement without violations.
The Parliament is expected to debate the truce agreement on Thursday as requested by the opposition.
The government and Tamil rebels are expected to hold peace talks in Thailand in June.
