Britain to Open New Embassy in East Timor

The British government announced on Wednesday it is to open its new embassy in East Timor on May 20 when the United Nations will hand over sovereignty to the democratically elected government of East Timor.

Foreign Office Minister Ben Bradshaw said in a news release: " On May 20 we will open a new embassy in Dili, East Timor, which on that day becomes the first new democracy of the 21st Century."

Ben Bradshaw said he will represent the British government at the independence celebrations in East Timor on May 19-20. Hamish St Clair Daniel, who is already heading the British Mission in Dili, will become our first ambassador to the Democratic Republic of East Timor.

"The establishment of an independent state is a great tribute to the people of East Timor and the work of the international community, particularly the United Nations," Ben Bradshaw said.
