By 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, 64 bodies had been retrieved from the sea near the port of Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning Province after an MD-82 aircraft from China's Northern Airlines crashed Tuesday night.

The plane carrying 103 passengers and a nine-member crew plunged into sea at 38 degrees north latitude and 121 degrees eastern longitude at about 21:40 Tuesday night.

Many vessels are searching for survivors and salvaging the plane debris but experts say there is little possibility of anyone on board surviving.

According to an official in charge of the operation, the Dalian- based Zhoushuizi Airport received a report sent by MD airliner CJ6136 at 21:32 hours Tuesday saying that a fire had broken out in the cabin. The ground control center then lost contact with the plane. Five minutes later, a fishing boat reported to the marine salvage center that it had seen a passenger plane on fire and falling. The Dalian City Government immediately ordered the marine supervision bureau, harbor administration, armed police units and other departments to send ships to search the survivors.
