ADB Meeting's Serial Activities Kick off in Shanghai

The serial activities of the 35th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) kicked off Wednesday morning in Shanghai, China's largest industrial and commercial city.

Shanghai Ready for ADB Annual Meeting
The serial activities of the 35th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) kicked off Wednesday morning in Shanghai, China's largest industrial and commercial city.

Major activities held Wednesday included the Open Forum on Cooperation Between ADB and NGOs (Non-government Organizations), the Seminar on Sequencing of Financial Liberalization and Regional Trade Implications of China, and a forum on cooperative projects in infrastructure between China and the United States.

This is the second time for China to host an ADB annual meeting. The country hosted the regional bank's 1989 annual meeting in Beijing.

Sources with ADB and China's Ministry of Finance have described this year's gathering as the largest and highest-level of ADB annual meetings.

More than 90 activities, such as forums, seminars and multilateral talks, are scheduled for May 8-12, and some 3,300 participants, including senior officials from the 60 ADB members, will attend.

The 35th annual meeting, the main event, is set for May 10-12, with major topics centering on such areas as economic situation in the Asia-Pacific region, aid to the reconstruction of Afghanistan and continued efforts for poverty alleviation.

On May 9, a special seminar named "PRC (People's Republic of China) Day" will be staged for an in-depth discussion on the heated topic of China's present economic and social development.

ADB Meeting Attendants Keen on "P.R.C. Day"
As one of the serial activities to be held during the 35th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a seminar featuring China's economic development has aroused wide interest among the meeting participants.

According to an official from the ADB, attendants registered for the seminar, called "P.R.C. Day", has greatly exceeded their expectations.

The president of ADB, Tadao Chino said that against the backdrop of global economic slowdown, China's economy has maintained robust growth, and its future development and integration into the world economy will produce a tremendous impact on the economic situation of Asia and the world at large, adding that accounts for people's enthusiasm and attention on the seminar.

On the occasion, scheduled for May 9, Chinese Financial Minister Xiang Huaicheng and other high-level officials from China's State Development Planning Commission, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, the State Trade and Economic Commission, the People's Bank of China, the State Environment Protection Administration, and the Development and Research Center of the State Council, etc, will give all those present an account on the achievements China has made in its reform and opening-up, development strategies and policies in economic globalization, and explore the strategies to cope with possible risks and challenges.

The ADB's 35th annual meeting, to be held from May 10-12, is the second time China held such a conference after the 1989's 22nd annual meeting. This occasion will witness the number of participants hitting an all-time high of 3,300.

After examining the meeting venue, Tadao Chino expressed his satisfaction with the meeting's preparation work, as well as his belief in the success of the event.

The seminar, according to organizers, will help enhance the region and the world's understanding of China, and promote information exchanges among participants.
