Sri Lanka's leftist JVP or the People's Liberation Front has denied media allegations that it hasan alliance with the main opposition People's Alliance to contest some rural councils at the forthcoming local government elections for 17 bodies to be held on May 20.
In a press release published by local media on Wednesday, the JVP stated that it will never engage in narrow politics by formingalliances to increase the number of its members.
However, when solutions are sought for national problems the JVP will unite and join hands with any other political parties.
The release added that the need of the hour was to fight for and settle fundamental problems eliminating minor differences.
During the period of the previous People's Alliance government of President Kumaratunga the JVP supported the government to form a probationary government and avoided being defeated in parliament.
The alliance was, however, short lived and the government was dissolved on the eve of a no-confidence motion proposed by the joint opposition following the crossover of a dozen members of thegovernment including four ministers.
