Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi on May 6 denied circulating news that negotiations have been conducted between Iranian officials and Americans in Cyprus or any other countries, state media reported in Tehran.
Asefi reiterated that no individual has been assigned to hold talks with the United States, ending speculation that contacts between Tehran and Washington are underway.
The United States severed ties with Iran after Iranian students stormed the American Embassy in Tehran in 1979 and took its staff hostage for 444 days.
Earlier, Iranian Majlis (parliament) Speaker Mahdi Karrubi said that it is up to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to decide whether Iran should develop ties with the United States, a long- time sworn enemy of the Islamic republic.
Khamenei has long ruled out the possibility of resuming Tehran- Washington ties.
