Nigeria cancelled its World Cup warm-up match against China on May 11 in honor of sports minister Ishaya Mark Aku who was killed in a plane crash at the weekend.
"The match has been cancelled in honor of the sports minister,"said the secretary-general of the Nigeria Football Association Taiwo Ogunjobi on Sunday. "We're all devastated by his death. We will greatly miss him."
Nigeria was planning to meet fellow World Cup finalists China in Kunming on May 11 as part of their preparations for the World Cup. Nigeria is drawn in the first round against Argentina, England and Sweden.
However officials said that the other World Cup friendlies against Republic of Ireland in Dublin on May 16 and Jamaica in London on May 18 would take place as planned.
A Nigerian passenger jet crashed on a domestic flight from Kanoto Lagos on Saturday, where Aku was due to watch Nigeria's last home friendly before setting off for the finals.
