South Korean President Kim Dae-Jung quit his Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) and offered a public apology again on Monday for the involvement of his sons and aides in corruption scandals.
In a statement read at a press conference by Senior Secretary for Policy Planning Park Jie-Won, Kim said: "How can I apologize enough for the scandal and public anger over my sons and some ofthe figures around me? I once again make a sincere apology."Kim also said he will focus on a successful hosting of the soccer World Cup, which is to be held in South Korea and Japan from May 31 to June 30, economic recovery and developing ties with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Kim founded the ruling MDP in January 2000, but he retired as the MDP president last November due to inner conflicts over party reforms.
The president's decision to quit the party was seen as an apparent move to distance himself from party politics and focus more on state affairs, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday, quoting a senior presidential official as saying. His term as president ends in February next year.
