The Uganda People's Defense Forces ( UPDF) have killed 18 Lord Resistance Army (LRA) rebels when the Ugandan army mounted an assault on the rebels in southern Sudan, army spokesman said Saturday in Kampala.

UPDF Spokesman Major Shaban Bantariza, who is also assistant to Defense Minister Amama Mbabazi, told Xinhua that the UPDF is in a hot pursuit of the rebels in southern Sudan and on Friday, the UPDF soldiers mounted an assault on the RLA rebels in the Agoro mountains from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. (1300-1500 GMT) in southern Sudan.

He said during the first day fighting, the rebels lost 18 people, adding that the UPDF are continuing in pursuit of the rebels in southern Sudan.

Meanwhile, Bantariza said the rebels have murdered at least 300 people in the last two weeks in southern Sudan.

"Not less than 300 people in the Acholi, Agoro and Imatong mountains have been killed by the LRA in a killing frenzy that has lasted about two weeks," he said.

The figure includes 60 mourners in a funeral process from a village who were gunned down by the rebels last Friday, he added.

The LRA led by Joseph Kony and based in southern Sudan has been listed as a terrorist organization by the Ugandan government. The LRA rebels have abducted about 10,000 children and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians in northern Uganda in the past 15 years.

In an operation named "Iron Fist" in southern Sudan, the UPDF overrun LRA's main camps and captured a large quantity of arms in March. The UPDF are pursuing the rebels in mountainous areas of southern Sudan.
