Vice President Arrives in San Francisco, Final Leg to the US
Chinese Vice President Hu Jintao arrived in San Francisco on Thursday on the final leg of his crucial maiden trip to the United States. Hu flew into San Francisco's international airport on his Boeing 747 at the start of a 24-hour stop aimed at meeting members of the city's huge Chinese population as well as top city officials.
He was due to host a lunch for local Chinese community leaders before attending a dinner banquet given by San Francisco Mayor Willy Brown at a plush downtown hotel.
Hu, who began his visit on Saturday, held talks with US president George W. Bush and his host, Vice President Dick Cheyney, on Wednesday during his stay in the US capital, Washington.
The vice-president warned after meeting Bush that increasing US support for Taiwan, an indispensable part of China, could cause a major setback in already testy Sino-US relations.
