China and the Republic of Korea (ROK) are marching towards an all-round cooperative partnership, former ROK Prime Minister Lee Hong-Koo said in Weihai on Thursday at the on-going 2002 Northeast Asia Economic Forum.
Lee said at the forum, held in this coastal city of east China's Shandong Province, that economic exchanges and cooperation between China and the ROK had made striking gains since the two countries established diplomatic relations 10 years ago. The two countries had forged sound cooperative relations in the fields of investment, trade, culture, sports and education, and would also enjoy wide-ranging cooperation in the future.
Bilateral trade increased five times during the past 10 years.
ROK investment in China added up to less than 200 million U.S. dollars in 1992, but surged to five billion U.S. dollars in 2001, which made China the ROK's second largest investment target.
Lee said that both countries were also actively boosting scientific and technological cooperation, and exchanges and cooperation in the fields of clothing, music, games, TV and other cultural fields were progressing smoothly. An organization had been set up in the ROK to share its experience in successfully staging the Olympic Games with China.
He noted that Chinese tourists to the ROK reached 440,000 in 2001, while ROK tourists to China totaled 1.1 million.
Lee said that as reported in the Hong Kong-based Asiaweek magazine, an affectionate craze for studying China had emerged in the ROK. It even exceeded China's "learn from the ROK" craze.
The Northeast Asia Economic Forum is a regional non-governmental organization founded in 1991. The Northeast Asia region includes China, Japan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, ROK, Mongolia and the Far East area of Russia.
