Over 5,000 people have been massacred by the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in western Ugandan and eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 1996, local media Thursday quoted the Ugandan army as saying.

Ugandan Army Commander James Kazini said that those killed by the rebel ADF included more than 80 students of Kichwamba Technical College in Kabarole district in southwestern Uganda, whom the rebels burnt to ashes in their sleep in 1998.

Kazini made the remarks in Kasese district while briefing on the security situation in southwestern Uganda, saying that former ADF rebels who had surrendered to the Ugandan army gave these information.

He said those who had surrendered included ADF army chief of staff Chris Tushable and chief of records Sheikh Sadat Kinobe.

Kazini also said the Ugandan army had killed most of the estimated 6,500 ADF rebels who had launched a rebellion since 1996 in the jungles of southwestern Uganda and eastern DRC.

ADF, based in eastern DRC, has been listed as a terrorist organization by the Ugandan government.
