Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf has won the Presidential referendum for another five years in office in a landslide victory, according to unofficial polling results announced from the Election Commission on Wednesday afternoon.
By early afternoon the Election Commission reported results from three-quarters of the country's polling stations, with more than 98 percent of voters favoring Musharraf and less than 2 percent against him.
Of the total 87,274 polling stations spread throughout the country, 66,159 polling stations have reported to the Election Commission that a total of 36,512,879 votes were polled in favor of Pervez Musharraf while 625,891 voters were against him.
The Election Commission has received results from 75 percent of the polling stations across the country and "the turnout so far is 50 percent," Information Minister Nisar Memon told the Pakistani state television.
Voter response was "beyond our expectations," he said, adding that people had given their verdict and they wanted Musharraf to stay because he had brought economic stability while cracking down on corruption.
