One of the two boats of Sri Lanka's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels exploded off the eastern coast of the country on Wednesday,Naval officials said.

The navy spotted the two boats of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) off the coast of Vakarai in the northeast of capital Colombo around 5.45 p.m..

One of the boats blew up while the other had reached the shore safely. No details of casualties are available.

The navy did not attack the LTTE rebel boats.

"There was no exchange of fire," Brigadier Sanath Karunaratne, the military spokesman said.

The LTTE rebels and the government troops are currently observing an indefinite ceasefire in accordance with a truce agreement signed between the two sides in February this year.

Both sides are expected to hold peace talks in Thailand in June with Norwegian facilitation, which aim to end the protracted ethnic conflict that has claimed over 64,000 lives since 1983.
