China Monday was re-elected into the UN Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) and with the most votes of Asian group it will be a Commission member state for the next three years beginning from 2002.

After the election outcome was announced, Zhang Yishan, the Chinese permanent assistant-representative to the United Nations, told reporters that the result clearly shows that most of UN member states support China's continuous contribution to human rights affairs.

China has been actively taking part in the activities on human rights and has greatly contributed to the world economy, politics and social development, he said.

China always attaches great importance to and actively participates in UN's activities on protecting human rights. It strives for promoting the development of human rights via dialogue and cooperation and opposes interference in other countries' internal affairs under the pretext of protecting human rights.

The UN Commission on Human Rights, founded in 1946, has 53 member states so far. It has served as the most important organ for promoting and protecting human rights in the United Nations.
