The upcoming referendum is not being held for personal gains, and as the nation and the country are standing at a crucial juncture of their existence, the verdict by the people on April 30 will greatly influence the future course of events in Pakistan.

This was stated by Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf Monday night while addressing the nation over radio and TV.

He assured the nation that the referendum will be fair and transparent, saying that several foreign institutions and individuals who contacted the government have been allowed to observe its transparency.

He that the most important issue facing the country at present is the continuity of reforms, his own role and establishment of a sustainable democratic process.

Musharraf assured the nation that elections to the National and Provincial Assemblies and Senate will be held in October.

For a durable democracy, he said, the barest minimum but essential amendments will be brought about in the Constitution and these amendments will be put to public debate. A decision will be taken upon the opinions of the masses, he added.
