Beijing has promised "Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People's Olympics" in 2008. How to reflect these three themes in the Games?
Lin Wenyi, vice-mayor of Beijing and a doctoral tutor in engineering physics at China's famed Tsinghua University, gave the answer of "technology" in her presentation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission here on Monday.
Lin introduced that Green Olympics could be seen in new building materials that make the buildings more environment- friendly. And furthermore, the use of solar energy would supply 80-90 percent of the road lighting around the Olympic venues. Some 90 percent of the bathing water in the Olympic Village will be heated by solar heat-collecting devices.
Advanced communication facilities, digital transmission service, user-friendly information services, and Olympic information security technologies are to be developed to present a High-tech Olympics.
And People's Olympics is tied with intelligent buildings, security assurance, and other services.
"At present, we are inviting domestic and foreign experts from different fields to join in the research of technological developments regarding venue construction, communication, transport, environment, and sports science," said Lin.
"They will also make proposals for the High-tech Olympics Construction," she added.
And "proposals" immediately came from the IOC Coordination Commission, who suggested that the most important thing is not how advanced the technology could be, but whether the technology is reliable, necessary, and without extravagant cost.
